With image quality, the brightening of the night sky is the biggest obstacle to observing faint objects beyond the solar system. Due to street lighting and other artificial light sources, the sky in urban areas is no longer truly dark.

The contrast suffers, and thus the perception of deep-sky objects. Depending on the type of celestial object, however, one can filter out some of the bothersome light, thereby facilitating the observation of the objects.

The result is stunning: suddenly, nebulae are visible in places that appear completely empty without a filter. In a slightly illuminated sky, the Cirrus nebula NGC 6992 is for example almost invisible with a 200 mm telescope.
