With image quality, the brightening of the night sky is the greatest obstacle to observing faint objects beyond the solar system. Due to street lighting and other sources of artificial light, the sky in urban areas is no longer truly dark. The contrast suffers, and thus the perception of deep-sky objects. Depending on the type of celestial object, one can filter out some of the annoying light and thus facilitate the observation of the objects.

The UHC filter from EXPLORE SCIENTIFIC exploits the characteristics of emission nebulae. These objects are bright in certain colors, called emission lines. The emission lines are associated with certain chemical elements, in this case, hydrogen and oxygen.

The UHC nebula filter from EXPLORE SCIENTIFIC thus blocks all other colors (and also nearly all artificial light) and only allows the emission lines of hydrogen at 486 nm and 656 nm, as well as the emission lines of oxygen at 496 nm and 501 nm to pass through.

The result is astonishing: suddenly, nebulae are visible in places that appear completely empty without a filter. In a slightly illuminated sky, some relatively bright nebulae are practically invisible with a telescope, such as the Owl Nebula M97 or the Cirrus Nebula NGC 6992 or even the Dumbbell Nebula M27.
