Enjoy the most stunning views of nebulae with your Celestron Origin when you add this hydrogen-alpha, hydrogen-beta, doubly ionized oxygen (Hα-Hβ-OIII) imaging filter. This specialized filter allows for a high throughput of the bright wavelengths from emission nebulae while blocking other wavelengths that could diminish image quality and detail. The result is bright, colorful nebula images that stand out with strong details against the black sky background.

How does the nebula filter work for Origin? Emission nebulae primarily emit discrete wavelengths of light - Hα at 656 nm, Hβ at 486 nm, and OIII at 496/501 nm. By strategically transmitting only these wavelengths of light and blocking the rest of the spectrum, the filter significantly reduces the effects of light pollution. The “bad” light is blocked while the “good” light associated with emission nebulae passes through the Origin sensor.

You will immediately notice a much higher contrast in your images, especially in your light-polluted garden! And since the transmission at the critical wavelengths is very high, the nebula will not be darkened, only the background will be darker. You will also notice an improvement in contrast in images of nebulae taken under darker skies, as the filter allows blocking natural sky glows.


Nebula hunting

The Nebula filter is perfect for imaging emission nebulae such as the North America Nebula (NGC 7000), the Lagoon Nebula (M8), the Orion Nebula (M42), the Carina Nebula (NGC 3372), and dozens more. The imaging filter provides maximum light transmission at the key wavelengths Hα-Hβ-OIII, producing high contrast for emission nebulae like these.

The transmission spectrum of the Nebula filter is 85% or more for the key wavelengths (486 nm, 496 nm/501 nm, 656 nm) and less than 0.5% for other wavelengths. As a narrowband filter, it blocks a large part of the visible spectrum and only allows these specific wavelengths to pass through. For this reason, you should not use this filter to observe or photograph broadband emission objects such as galaxies and star clusters. For these objects, you will achieve the best results by removing the nebula filter and reinstalling the clear optical window of Origin.

Other similar imaging filters on the market have much narrower bandwidths at the critical Hα-Hβ-OIII wavelengths. Unfortunately, these filters block a large portion of incoming Hα-Hβ-OIII light for an f/2.2 optical system like Origin's RASA 6”. This is because a RASA brings light into the filter at a steeper angle, causing a spectral shift. If you use filters that are not explicitly designed for use at f/2.2, some of the light from the nebula will be blocked, resulting in a dimmer image. The Nebula filter for Origin has been specifically designed to work at f/2.2, so none of the “good” light from the nebula is inadvertently blocked by the filter.


Housing and storage

The filter features a black anodized machined aluminum cell with a knurled edge for better grip during installation. We have added anti-reflective coatings to help suppress reflections on the glass. The filter fits directly into the filter drawer of the Celestron Origin's front lens, where the optical window is located. Simply remove the clear window and replace it with the filter. The Origin retains its optical performance when the filter is installed. No other adapter is required.

Each filter comes with a foam-lined plastic case for safely storing the filter or the optical window provided with your Celestron Origin when not in use.

Celestron individually tests each Nebula filter for Origin to verify its performance. With your filter, you will receive a spectral transmission graph (like the one shown above) showing the test results of your filter and verifying that it functions as intended across the spectrum..
