Euromex cover slips 18x18 mm

Euromex - Cover slips (100 pieces)

A cover slip is a flat piece of transparent glass with a thickness of a fraction of a millimeter. It is placed on the slide for observation under the microscope.

The main function of the cover slip is to exert a constant pressure on solid samples and to obtain a uniform thickness of liquid samples. This is necessary because optical microscopes with high magnifications (400x-1000x) have a critical depth of focus; therefore, the flatter the sample, the better the image quality obtained.

The cover slip also has other functions: it immobilizes the sample on the slide (either by its own weight or in the case of liquid samples by surface tension), it protects the sample from dust and accidental contact, it protects the microscope objective lens in case of contact with the sample, and it allows working with oil or water immersion objectives since it prevents the immersion liquid from contacting the sample. The cover slip can be fixed with a mounting solution (Euromex Entellan) to delay dehydration and oxidation of the sample. Microbial and cellular cultures can be grown directly on the cover slip before being placed on the slide.

FIXATION

The cover slip is often “glued” to the slide to seal the sample to prevent contamination and deterioration.
